In the short article below, Joseph Cornell welcomes you and shares his vision for Sharing Nature Worldwide:

As many of you know, for many years I've been a resident of the intentional community, Ananda Village. Living here has shown me how powerful it is when like-minded people work together for commonly held aspirations.

Similarly we're creating Sharing Nature Worldwide-to bring together people who share the same ideals and aspirations. Since 1979 I've met so many people who are using the Sharing Nature activities and philosophy in creative and beautiful ways. Recently I talked to a Brazilian woman who was teaching the games with great success to the lost children of Rio. A few years ago I toured an intensive-care facility for children where my guide showed me how she used the activities with bed-ridden patients.

An author friend of mine told me that when he writes he doesn't try to do all the thinking for his readers, Instead, he sees his writing as seminal: expressing seed thoughts that germinate in the minds of his readers and flower in creative ways in their lives. Similarly, the Sharing Nature activities are only a beginning, because each one of us adapts them to fit our personal goals, the group we're teaching, and our setting. I hope this journal can be a vehicle for you to share your success, to learn from others, and to network with those in similar situations.

My friends with the Japan Nature Game Association have been a leading force behind Sharing Nature Worldwide. We have worked together since 1986, and I am continually inspired by their sensitivity to nature, their creativity, and the success they've achieved with the Sharing Nature approach in their country and Southeast Asia. They have created an organization of over 7,000 trained Sharing Nature teachers and naturalists. Shin-ichi Furihata, the president, has volunteered to help anyone else who's trying to create a Sharing Nature organization in their country.

How is the Sharing Nature program different from other environmental organizations?

Albert Einstein pointed out the need for uplifting people's consciousness when he said, "You cannot solve a problem on the same level that it was created." Our attitudes, behavior, and experience of life reflect our level of consciousness. When we are inspired we're naturally sensitive to others and expansive in our outlook. This is why Sharing Nature believes in the importance of transformational experiences in nature, and through them, seeks to change people from the inside/out rather than hoping the outer can in some way influence the inner. Practically speaking, to do this we use Flow Learning™, a playful, reflective and inspiring process that works with people where they are, and gently brings them to a deeper, more profound experience of nature.

If you have been inspired by the Sharing Nature books and would like to meet others like yourself, we invite you to join us. You'll want to join our mailing list and contact the Country Coordinator nearest you to find out about upcoming events.

If you would like more in-depth training in our philosophy and methods, I encourage you to come to our annual Sharing Nature Conference Retreat and How To Be A Creative and Inspiring Teacher course held at Ananda Village in Nevada City, California. You will enjoy these courses for the personal and professional inspiration you will receive, besides the many skills you will learn. You will also meet many new and interesting friends from all over the world.

I hope you will be able to attend a Sharing Nature Worldwide event soon, I, or one of our leaders, would very much enjoy meeting you there.

In Peace and Beauty,
Joseph Cornell
