Sharing Nature Meditation 1
Becoming One with Nature, and Experiencing the Great Silence
Becoming One with Nature
“If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change.” — Buddha
Let your mind simply witness and appreciate what your senses bring to its attention.
“When I discovered a new plant, I sat down beside it for a minute or a day, to hear what it had to tell me.” — John Muir
Experiencing the Great Silence
“With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony, and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things.” -- Wordsworth
It is intuition that gives us a clear, unfiltered view of reality. Calm feeling is receptive; it is like a mirror that receives and reflects life clearly. Calm feeling increases awareness and love. It’s the heart that understands new and deeper truths.

Let your mind simply witness and appreciate what your senses bring to its attention.
- Go to a natural area that feels especially captivating, such as a small stream lined with maple trees, a flowery meadow, or an aspen forest. Gaze around you and enjoy everything you see and hear.
- Notice how when you’re deeply attentive everything becomes vibrantly alive.
- Then observe how when your thoughts are distracted, the world of nature disappears. Continue observing the flow of your awareness, noting when you’re fully present and when you’re not.
- Imagine the power of sustained, engaged awareness. Only by focusing our attention completely can we meet nature face-to-face, and truly know her.
- Gaze deeply into the face of a flower. Absorb the intensity of its brightly colored petals. Sense the harmony of the flower’s shape and structure. Observe the texture and shape of its leaves.
- Be a mirror, reflecting everything you see. Suspend thinking. See the flower.
- Please feel free to write in your journal about your experiences.

- Go to a quiet natural area where you can feel the silence around you. Listen to the sounds of birds singing, leaves rustling in the wind, and waves lapping on the shore.
- Try to sense the ever-present silence between and behind each natural sound.
- Observe your breath as you inhale and exhale. Enjoy the natural pauses between your exhalation and inhalation. Experiencing moments of stillness in yourself will help you experience the great silence.
- Please feel free to write in your journal about your experiences.
“There is in all things an inexhaustible sweetness…a silence that is a fountain of…joy. It rises up in wordless gentleness and flows out to me from unseen roots of all created being.” — Thomas Merton, Trappist monk
