The Flow Learning model of education came to me during a Sharing Nature workshop tour in Australia in 1981. Toward the end of my visit, my genial Aussie host reported enthusiastically: “On our drive home, we can fit in an extra, spur-of-the-moment university lecture.”
In the five previous weeks, I had taught nineteen all-day workshops and given numerous lectures and media appearances, while traveling 11,000 kilometers around Australia’s Eastern states. I was unable to match my host’s enthusiasm—I was too tired even to respond.
Arriving at the university, I knew that my unwillingness would only make the evening worse for myself—and the audience. So, I went into the adjacent garden, and there meditated and prayed earnestly for the energy and enthusiasm to give a worthy talk.
During the lecture that followed, I was filled with a joyous, inspired energy. Suddenly and for the first time I saw clearly how the nature activities fit into a natural and effective flow, a flow that actually mirrored the flow in my meditation practice. I was so energized from the inspiration that my explanation of this new learning system ran long past the allotted time.
